Sun Lodge Farms is a social enterprise uniting three diverse groups of people. We are creating a lifelong living community for people with special needs supported by, and supporting, the needs of 50+ seniors and young agrarians.
“The earliest phases of the project began many years ago. At first I envisioned golf courses, hotels, restaurants, building lots and other amenities that I knew people would enjoy in this beautiful place.
Then I met David...and everything changed. David has special needs. When I saw the issues that he faced and the real concern and worry his family had when considering his future, I knew they weren't alone. Something needed to be done.
I was also exposed to discussions within my peer group about worthwhile involvement for active seniors in an environment where mentorship and respect were a real contribution. As well, a growing need for low-cost living in a beautiful and co-creative community was greatly desired by the people I spoke to.
The third and final group came to me through meetings and discussions with young farmers who expressed a need for farmland to grow sustainable and healthy produce in order to ensure local food security and distribution. These passionate agrarians also wished to individually or collectively raise livestock and poultry.
I thought about the dilemmas facing these three communities and realized that we could bring them together in a co-supportive environment. This became the new dream; the vision of Sun Lodge Farms."
Dennis Bruneau, Founder and President, Sun Lodge Farms Inc.
The plan moved closer to reality when 472 acres of land became available just outside of Nakusp. With the help of family and friends, the land was secured and the goal that it would become a lifelong living community farm for people with special needs was underway.
But this is just the beginning. Our goals now are to clear title and begin restoration of the "Central Lodge" which is to become the hub for all three communities. Site planning for the housing communities involves detailed specifications, architectural drawings, project management and numerous other details. These initial project plans and tasks need to be set in place.
Clearing title will ensure the future for all residents at Sun Lodge Farms, while creating a safe and inviting environment at the "Central Lodge" will allow this vision to come to life.
Each year we move closer to the ultimate goal. We have created strong bonds of partnership with multiple businesses leaders throughout the world.
